Callaway Wanes

Although the interior and mechanical upgrades in MY 1990 continued into MY 1991, the new year did bring significant exterior changes.   Despite exterior changes, sales dropped to 20,639 Corvettes (14,967 coupes and 5,672 convertibles).  The base price was $32,455 for the coupe and $38,770 for the convertible, over $6,000 difference in price.

A sleek bumper cap with integrated wraparound turn signals replaced the more blocky look of the first part of the C4 generation (from MY '84 through MY '90).  The rear end was a la ZR-1  with the same style convex clip and rectangular tail lights.  The twin vertical slots in the car's front genders were replaced with four horizontal vents and updated wheel designed were added to every model.  The few mechanical changes made included the addition of an oil-level monitoring systems and further revision of the Z51 suspension package which was renamed to RPO A07.

The LT5 in the ZR-1 stayed at 375 horsepower.   Over 2,000 ZR-1s were sold.  The 350 c.i. engine for the rest of the Vettes remained at 245/250 horsepower. 

The Callaway twin turbo option sold only 62 units and was its final year.  Costing $33,000, the Callaway option was more expensive than the $31,683 ZR-1 option.   (The MY 1991 ZR-1 option was up more than $4,000 over the MY 1990 ZR-1 option.)

A new turbine wheel design appeared and was used through MY 1996 with only small changes in the finish.

Ten exterior colors offered were:  Black, Steel Blue Metallic, Quasar Blue Metallic, White, Yellow, Turquoise Metallic, Dark Red Metallic, Bright Red, Polo Green Metallic and Charcoal Metallic.   Competition Yellow, appearing on only 278 Vettes in MY 1990, reappeared surprisingly as Yellow in the MY 1991 lineup.  ...and was painted on over 600 Vettes.   Bright Red, White and Black were the top 3 colors.
