Z for Zoom
The ZR-1, announced in MY 1989,
didn't officially show up for the party until MY 1990. ...but when it did,
ZOOM, ZOOM, ZOOM!
Major drivelines, tire and body modifications plus some
minor revisions to the suspension, interior and more meant one paid over $27,000
for adding RPO ZR-1 to your list of options. The total price for a loaded
ZR-1 zoomed to nearly $60,000 making it the most expensive Corvette to date.
...almost double the cost of its stable mates in MY 1990.
Nevertheless, 3,049 ZR-1s were sold.
The ZR-1's four-cam, 32-valve, all-alloy LT-5 engine was
the same bore spacing and displacement, but other than that...it was a
completely different engine. A collaboration among GM, Lotus and Mercury
Marine, the engine produced 375 horsepower and a top-end of over 180 mph.
All other Corvettes received an interior update
eliminating the 1980's high-tech look with all-digital gauges and flat surfaces
returning to a more modern, rounded theme and analog gauges. A new
steering wheel and a true glove compartment reappeared for the first time in
years. The remaining high doorsills and bulky transmission tunnel dated
the interior a bit.
The L98, standard engine was also updated with higher
compression, a more aggressive cam profile and improved air metering on the
intake side. Depending on body style and differential, output was either
245 or 250 hp.
Over 23,000 Corvettes were sold.
Coupes outsold the
convertibles by more than two to one.
