Portrait in Black and White
Even with the excitement of the 35th Anniversary edition and the Callaway
Twin-Turbo option, sales slipped to 22,789 Corvettes, an almost 25% reduction in
sales from MY 1987. Complicating matters, the 1988 looked almost
identical to 1987. The visual clue to the 1988? Restyled wheels
offered only for this model.
Minimalist approach to design changes and an increase in price by $1,490 were
part of the reasons for a reduction in sales. With the base price of $29,489, you bought minor but significant improvements
in the engine, suspension, brakes and interior. Power door locks, cruise
control and stereo cassette were now standard.

A total of 56 street-legal but
race prepared Corvettes were built for the SCCA Corvette Challenge Series while
Callaway twin-turbos added up to 124 units. Over 1300 owners seeking performance, albeit a slight performance increase,
paid $1,295 for the Z51
Performance Handling Package. The Z51 option provided P275/40ZR15 Z-rated tires on 17" wheels, heavy-duty suspension, fast-ratio steering, larger front rotors and calipers, a
radiator boost fan, a finned power-steering cooler, Delco-Bilstein shocks, an
engine oil cooler, and higher rate springs.
Available only on the coupe, the 35th Anniversary Edition featured two-tone
white exterior with a black roof bow. White leather seats and
steering wheel, a anniversary plaque and special emblems were part of the
package that 2,050 owners paid $4,795 for.
