The Harbinger
In
the spring of 1961, before Corvette's MY 1962 began, Jaguar introduced its new
1962 XK-E at the New York Auto Show. With a new body, new chassis,
independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes...the $4,915 XK-E represented
the major challenge to Corvette! The C2 generation was still months and
months away. What would be the impact on Corvette sales?
This was the last MY of the first generation; the last of the "solid axle" Corvettes,
the last year for exposed headlights until MY 2005 and
the C6 generation; the last year for a separate trunk until the C3 generation.
Two-tone paint wasn't available for MY 1962. The redeeming quality of this
MY...it was the first year of the classic 327 c.i. V8 engine. The
four tail lights was established this MY...a tradition that carries on today.
A new
sales record occurred as sales surged from just under 11,000 in MY 1961 to
14,531 in MY 1962.
Some tweaking of the exterior appointments first seen in MY 1961 occurred.
First, the stamped, aluminum grille was anodized black rather than silver.
The front end emblem was changed this year to include crossed flags within a
chrome circle with Corvette spelled out below in individual chrome-plated
letters.
 With
the "327", Corvette offered two options beyond the 315 horsepower top option in
MY 1961: a 340 (carburetion) and a 360 (fuel injection).
 Colors
offered included: Roman Red, Tuxedo Black,
Ermine White, Fawn Beige, Honduras Maroon, Sateen Silver, Almond Beige.
