The Penultimate Vette
 A
new
rear end, tail lights and grille put some punch into the penultimate model year
of the C1 generation and provided a glimpse of what Chevrolet had in mind for
the second generation.
Reaching almost 11,000 in sales, although only marginally more sales than MY 1960, Vettes came with a base price of $3,984 and engine options that ranged as high
as 315 horsepower! ...all based on a 283 c.i. V8...destined to
extinction at the end of the MY. Over 65 per cent of Corvettes were sold
with manual transmissions.
Colors included: Roman Red, Tuxedo Black,
Jewel Blue, Ermine White, Fawn Beige, Honduras Maroon and Sateen Silver.
 In
a move that presaged the C2 generation, the MY 1961 Vettes were introduced with
the "ducktail" rear end and legendary quad tail light arrangement. The
venerable "283" saw its last year as did the two-tone side cove paint. Sun
shades and courtesy lights became standard equipment.
