Corvette MY 1959

End of the Decade

The adornments (simulated hood louvers and parallel chrome trunk trim) that appeared in MY 1958 disappeared.   Black interior becomes available for the first time.  ...and the gearshift lever receives a "lockout" T-handle.  Sales still remained under 10,000.

Colors this year included:  Snowcrest White, Roman Red, Tuxedo Black, Frost Blue, Crown Sapphire, Classic Cream, Inca Silver

Briggs-Cunningham (BC) entered three Corvettes in Le Mans in 1960 driven by three teams of drivers: Cunningham and Bill Kimberly, Dick Thompson and Fred Windridge, and John Fitch and Bob Grossman. Zora Arkus-Duntov was the reserve driver.  Driving 283 c.i. "fuelies," the trio of Vettes was joined by a fourth American entry, Team Camoradi.  Fifty-five entries lined up.

Although nearly stock, the BC Vettes had larger gas tanks, quick-fill gas caps, Halibrand magnesium wheels, oil coolers, driving lights, racing seats and heavy-duty suspension components among other modifications.

Fitch and Grossman were the successful team running as high as seventh despite cold, rain and an overheating engine.  Using ice to cool the engine, the BC team finished eighth overall and first in the "big-bore GT class averaging 97.92 mph.  The finish was the best at Le Mans until the C5-Rs of the fifth generation.
