Katie and I took our Z06 to Free State Corvette's annual Corvettes in Ocean
City shindig from Friday, 9/28 to Monday 10/1.
On the way down, we were at one time in a string of 11 Corvettes...C3s, C4s
and C5s, all headed to OC. What a thrill!
We stayed at
Fager's Island which is modeled
on the famous bay lighthouse, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse. The B&B
is on the bayside at 56th street with only one way in and out.
("Perhaps the most photographed
lighthouse in The Chesapeake Bay, The Thomas
Point Shoal Lighthouse is the last screwpile structure left on its original
site in the bay. It went into service on November 27, 1875, to replace a light on
the shore at Thomas Point at the entrance to the South River. The Lighthouse
Board thought that a light on the shoal would better serve the shipping traffic
in the bay. A screwpile with a hexagonal 1-1/2-story building perched on
the spidery legs, the light's lantern rises out of the center of the building.
During its early years floating ice tipped over the fourth-order lens in the
lantern. In time heavy riprap was placed around the lighthouse to fend off the
ice. With its red roof and white sides this picturesque lighthouse is a fine
example of its type. The light and fog signal, both now automated, are still
active. This was the last
staffed lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay." ...from WWW.NIGHTCOASTER.COM)
With all the 'Vettes in town, we spotted a few vanity plates we liked
as we awaited delivery of our own plates (Z422ESC). VETTISH, EARNDIT and
YESDEAR caught our collective eye.
On Saturday afternoon after Katie and I spent an hour cleaning up our Z, we
participated in the boardwalk parade. Over 500 hundred 'Vettes and lots of
owners were staged at a huge municipal parking lot on 100th street.

The wind was blowing and we were about 1/2 hour late in getting started. Soooo, we decided to have one taken in front of the car too. |

...and then we were released one-by-one to parade down to 27th street and the
entrance to the boardwalk. We didn't expect to see a lot of people, but
there were hundreds lined up on the boardwalk to see the parade of several
hundred Corvettes driving straight down the boardwalk to 1st street and then
off. Katie drove to much applause...both for her being one of only a few female
drivers and also the only one piloting a Z06. We heard the refrain
"Go, lady driver!" several times and Katie was quite pleased! Katie leaned toward me after
passing several onlookers who were yelling for her to "rev" the
engine. After a short translation, Katie was revving the engine with the
best of them. She was extremely surprised at how many people not only
recognized the Z06, but also the electron blue color!

Oh yes...did I mention that when we arrived at the staging area, they were
checking wrist bands that had been given out during registration. No wrist
band, no drive on the boardwalk. Wellllll, Katie's husband forgot his
wrist band. Too late to return to the hotel. She walked over to some
of the Free State Corvette officials and after being handed off from one to
another, she finally reached someone who listened carefully. The official
asked where her husband was located in the parking lot. Katie pointed out
the rueful looking fellow with the gray beard and the yellow baseball cap.
She agreed with the official that her husband was probably stupid for not having his wrist band.
After much begging and pleading...because "This is my husband's first Corvette and his first time
participating in Corvettes at OC," the official gave in and provided Katie
with a wrist
band for her husband. He later walked by the car, admonishing Danny to never take it off
again. We made the parade and had a blast driving on the boardwalk.
(Thanks, Katie!)
Fast forward to Monday morning. A gale force wind caused water to back up on the bayside of OC...resulting
in flooding. Overnight, several roads were closed by OC police. When we woke up the one road into the B&B was flooded. Ducks
were swimming on the erstwhile road. We finally managed to get up enough
courage and we and our Z06 waded through the flooded road. ...followed by
a Bimmer which waited out of the way until our 'Vette led the way. Ain't
that always the way it is?
