Vette EZ ID

You're a Corvette enthusiast and can pretty well "walk the walk" and "talk the talk."  ...but maybe you own a C5 and all of those C4s seem to blend together.  ...or you can't determine which year is which in the later C1 Vettes.

Vette EZ ID attempts to distill the exterior changes to a point where you can quickly determine the year of the Corvette you're examininig.

...this is a work in progress, so at any time you might see a mixture of approaches to displaying the information.

     C1 Generation  (1953-1962)

Are the headlights covered by wire?  Only 1953 - 1955 Vettes had wire covering the headlights.

If the headlights are covered by wire and the color is anything except white, then the Vette is either a 1954 or 1955.

The tailpipes extend noticeably beyond the body?  ...or do they extend only a few inches beyond the body?  If they terminate right after the body, then the Corvette is a 1953.

1953 through 1955
The headlights are covered by wire.

1955
"Chevrolet" on the side panels has a capitalized V, i.e., CheVrolet, signifying a V-8...first available in MY 1955.

1958
There are dual headlights, and...
The hood contains a "washboard" or "ridges" between the two parallel "spears."

1959 and 1960
There are dual headlights, and...
The grille contains the teeth from the '56 - '58 model, and...
The hood does not have the "washboard" or "ridges" between the two parallel "spears."

1961
The stamped aluminum grille is silver, or...
Three horizontal ribs extend from the front of the cove, and...
There are four tail lights.

1962
The stamped, aluminum grille is anodized black, or...
The front edge of the cove has a simulated grille.

     C2 Generation (1963-1967)

1963
The rear window is split into two sections, or...
There are 2 simulated grilles on the hood.

1964
The side panels have horizontal ribs, and...
There are 2 depressions on the hood.

1965 - 1966
The side panels have 3 vertical slits.

1967
The side panels have 5 vertical slits.

     C3 Generation (1968-1982)

Does the Corvette have a chrome front bumper?  If it does, then it's a 1968 through 1971 Corvette.

     C4 Generation (1984-1996)

The first question to ask when looking at a C4?

Are there vertical or horizontal slots on the body side panels?

Vertical slots....then you're looking at a 1984 through 1989.

Horizontal slots...you're looking at a 1990 through a 1996.

1984 through 1989

Does it have TUNED INJECTION PORT on the body molding behind the front wheelwell?

If it does, then it’s a 1984.

If it doesn’t, then it’s an ’85 through ’89.

1985 through 1989

Is it a convertible?

If so, it’s an ’86 – ’89.

     C5 Generation (1997-2004)

     C6 Generation (2005-    )

Does the car have visible headlights?  If it does, it's a 2005...the first year of the C6 generation.
